Đang - Describe the ongoings
Updated: Sep 16, 2020

Đang describes an ongoing action in Vietnamese. That is, the action is still unfolding in the timeframe that the speaker is referring to. Think of the "verb + ING" form in English.
You can use đang by putting it in front of a verb.
Note: You can highlight the Vietnamese text to listen to it. Con chó đang sủa. (The dog is barking.) Mẹ đang đi làm. (Mom is working.) Cô Ba đang ăn bánh mì. (Auntie Ba is eating a banh mi sandwich.) Cái nồi đang sôi. (The pot is boiling.)
Although similar to the "verb + ING" form in English, đang is not limited to just verbs. It can also be used with adjectives. In that case, đang describes an ongoing "state" of something.
Note: You can highlight the Vietnamese text to listen to it. Con mèo đang bệnh. (The cat is [being] sick.) Cái tô đang nóng! (The bowl is [being] hot!) Mẹ ơi, cái chân của con đang ngứa. (Mom, my leg is [being] itchy.) Giá vàng đang cao. The price of gold is [being] high.)
As you acquire Vietnamese, you will learn that the native speakers use đang a lot. Have fun putting the word đang everywhere and sound a little more native every day!
