Là - To be

Là has the meaning of the verb to be in English.

Là can be used as the verb to be in English.

Note: You can highlight the Vietnamese text to listen to it. Tôi là học sinh. (I am a student.) Chị Trang là một ca sĩ. (Trang is a singer.) Họ là những người lính. (They are soldiers.)

Là can only be used with nouns or noun clauses!

Unlike to be in English, it should not be used with adjectives.

If adjectives are used, we just omit là.

To negate là, we add không phải in front of là. Easy.

Không phải là can literally be translated as must not be.

However, it just means not to be.

To make a question, use either:

• phải là + không OR

• có phải là + không OR

• là + phải không
