Của - Possession
Của means "of" in Vietnamese, in a nutshell. Listen to how it is pronounced below.
As a noun, của literally translates to "possession" in Vietnamese. While you can certainly use it as a noun to mean belongings, possessions, and things that you own, this lesson focuses on another aspect of của. That is, của is also a preposition, expressing possession. How appropriate! Anyway, to use của, all you have to do put it before the owner (whether it is someone or something), exactly like the use of "of" in English. Let's look at some examples.
Note: You can highlight the Vietnamese text to listen to it. Đây là điện thoại của tôi. (This is my phone. [lit. This is phone of me.]) Cái nhà đó là của An. (That house is An's. / [lit. That house is of An.]) Chiếc xe hơi này không phải là của bạn. (This car is not yours. / [lit. This car is not of you.]) Hai cái bánh xe sau của cái xe hơi bị hư rồi! (The two rear tires of the car are broken already!)
Sometimes, của is omitted if the context is clear. Unfortunately, there are no hard rules for when của should be omitted, so keep your eyes and ears out for those cases. No worries, though. I think it's quite intuitive to pick these up over time. Here are some examples.

Cái chân [của] bàn này ngắn hơn một chút. (This leg of the table is a bit shorter.) Con mắt bạn đẹp lắm. Con mắt [của] bạn đẹp lắm. (Your eyes are very beautiful.)
Sometimes, "của" is omitted if the context is clear.
Additionally, của can also be used to express origin, too. Similar to expressing possession, it is used in the same manner. Let's look at some examples.
